What to Expect

When it comes to breast cancer treatments, no two patients will have the same experience.

You and your care team have developed a plan that most likely includes surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy. Each treatment comes with its own set of challenges, and the team at the Breast Health Center of Excellence will be here to help you throughout the treatment process.

​Here are some of the side effects you may experience from each type of treatment:

​​Surgery

  • Soreness or pain close to the incision
  • Tension around the neck from weight shifting
  • Numbness
  • Lymphedema

Chemotherapy

There are a number of chemotherapy drugs available, and the side effects can depend on the drug, the dosage, and how long the treatments last. Common side effects include:

  • Hair loss
  • Mouth sores
  • Changes in appetite (increase or decrease)
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Bruising

Endocrine (Anti-Hormone) Therapy​​​​

Radiation Therapy

Like chemotherapy, radiation therapy side effects can depend on the area that’s being treated. Side effects can include:

  • Skin irritation
  • Breast swelling
  • Fatigue
  • Lymphedema
